Our story

First Christian Church of Sherwood was officially founded in 1912, but started holding meetings in 1908. Its original location in downtown North Little Rock, also known as Argenta, was required for Urban Renewal in 1967. This prompted the church’s move to Sherwood, where a groundbreaking ceremony was held in 1968, and the construction of a new sanctuary, offices, classrooms and fellowship hall began. Active members exceeded 100, and the mortgage was burned in the early 1980s. In 2004, a building aptly named “Chalice Hall” was constructed to house a commercial kitchen, classrooms, a gym and stage and storage area. The buildings sit on a ten-acre lot with ample parking and a large front yard facing Kiehl Avenue, a major Sherwood thoroughfare.

Currently, we are a body of 45 active disciples utilizing the church’s great facilities for various ministries and community usage. While the majority of our church are from the “Survivor” generation (1961-81) and above, we are young-at-heart desiring to partner with others in the community to serve our neighbors. We are proud to have the offices of the Great River Region of the Disciples of Christ housed on our campus, as well as to operate a weekly food pantry for Sherwood and Jacksonville residents. In addition, we offer weekly Sunday School and worship services, where communion is offered openly. In addition, we host seasonal Bible studies and monthly Sunday Suppers.

Our future vision of serving God includes expanding the diversity of our church body, providing worship services outside the usual Sunday offerings, expanding mission outreach through partnerships and deepening our faith in God daily. We are trusting the Creator to love and work through the created ones – US. You are invited to join US on this exciting adventure!
